The aggregate productivity slowdown: A system approach

چکیده
I revisit the productivity slowdown debate by estimating capital-labor elasticity and bias of technical change for U.S. economy under four different models change. One with constant growth rates, one a structural break in which is linear, flexible time-varying rates. find evidence support non-constant rates factor-augmenting Labor-augmenting are decelerating, while capital-augmenting non negligible but vanishes quickly.

Endogenous depreciation, mismeasurement of aggregate capital, and the productivity slowdown
When we allow capital depreciation to be endogenous, the acceleration of investment-specific technological progress can distort the measurement of the aggregate capital stock. Our quantitative exercise shows that this effect may cause a substantial bias in the measurement of total factor productivity and can account for a large portion of the observed productivity slowdown since the 1970s. 2006...

We study if part of the recent international productivity slowdown can be ascribed to intangibles. Over the Great Recession both tangible and intangible investment fell, but intangible investment fell less and recovered much faster. This might a ect measured TFP growth via a combination of reduced spillovers (if any) from intangibles and mismeasurement of GDP. Using a 16 country dataset, and pr...
متن کاملPayment Uncertainty and the Productivity Slowdown
This paper proposes a simple model that possibly explains the productivity slowdown observed in Japan during the 1990s. Under a forbearance policy by the government toward nonperforming loans, one keeping insolvent firms afloat, other economic agents become exposed to a higher risk of not being paid by their customers (payment uncertainty). It is shown that the payment uncertainty, working thro...
متن کاملUnbalanced Growth and the U.S. Productivity Slowdown
X he single most important factor in determining a nation's standard of living in the long run is the productivity of its resources (primarily labor and capital). If maintained over time, even relatively small productivity growth rates can have large effects on living standards. For example, if productivity grew at a moderate 2.0 percent each year, the overall standard of living would double in...
متن کاملThe Productivity Growth Slowdown in Advanced Economies
Perhaps the most remarkable fact about economic growth in recent decades is the slowdown in productivity growth that occurred around the year 2000. This slowdown is global in nature, featuring in many countries throughout the world. In this discussion, I summarize some important characteristics of the slowdown and consider recent insights from the growth literature on its possible causes.
